Can America’s Power Grid Keep Up Without Renewables?
I’ve spent almost twenty years in the solar industry. In that time, I’ve watched solar go from being something people dismissed as a “rich person’s toy” to becoming one of the fastest-growing energy technologies in the world. I’ve seen battery storage evolve from a novelty into something
homeowners are beginning to depend on. I’ve watched utilities embrace renewable energy one day and fight it the next.
But I honestly don’t think we’ve seen anything yet. Everyone is talking about Artificial Intelligence. ChatGPT. Autonomous vehicles. Robotics. Automated manufacturing. Medical breakthroughs. Wall Street can’t stop talking about AI, and every major technology company is investing billions trying to be the first to dominate it.
What very few people are talking about is what all of that actually runs on. Electricity. Lots of it. And that’s where I believe the next major challenge and opportunity for America begins.
We’ve Been Looking at Solar the Wrong Way
For years, the conversation around solar has focused almost entirely on saving money.
“Lower your electric bill.”
“Lock in your energy costs.”
“Beat rising utility rates.”
Those are all great reasons to install solar. They’re true. But I think we’re entering an entirely different era. The next decade won’t be about whether solar saves you money. It will be about whether America can produce enough electricity to support the future we’re building.
THE AI PROBLEM
People imagine AI as software. Have you ever seen a data center? I see giant warehouses. Miles of servers. Cooling equipment running nonstop. Processors working twenty-four hours a day.
Every time someone asks ChatGPT a question, every image generated, every autonomous vehicle making a driving decision like my own Ford Lightening for example. The list goes on and it’s endless.
Somewhere, an enormous data center is burning through electricity to make it happen.
Now multiply that by hundreds of millions of people. Tapping this everyday.
That’s where we’re headed. These aren’t office buildings shutting their lights off at five o’clock. These facilities operate every second of every day.
And they’re being built faster than utilities can build the infrastructure to feed them. Now let’s stack a few more things onto the pile: electric vehicles, domestic manufacturing, battery factories, heat pumps replacing natural gas and oil heat, population growth.
We’re asking an electrical grid, much of which was designed decades ago to support a technology that’s changing faster than it ever has in history.
We Can’t Build Our Way Out Overnight
People say, “Just build more power plants.” If only it were that easy. Natural gas plants can take years. Nuclear? Sometimes more than a decade. Not to mention all the time and effort to mine the fossil fuels needed.
Power Grid Transmission lines seem to take forever because of permitting, land acquisition, and environmental reviews. Meanwhile the demand doesn’t stop growing despite these
limitations.
That’s why I believe solar has become one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. Not because it’s perfect. Nothing is.
But because it’s one of the few energy sources we can deploy quickly, almost anywhere.
Batteries Changed Everything
One of my favorite arguments against solar used to be: “What happens when the sun goes down?” Honestly? Twenty years ago that was a fair criticism. Today? Not so much.
Battery technology has completely changed the game. We’re no longer talking about simply generating electricity. We’re talking about storing it. Managing it. Using it when the grid
needs it most.
In my own home, I’ve watched battery storage become more than just backup power. It’s become part of an energy strategy. I think that’s exactly where the industry is headed.
The Future Isn’t One Giant Power Plant
I don’t believe the future of electricity is one massive power station sending power hundreds of miles across aging transmission lines. I think it’s millions of homes, thousands of businesses, factories schools, churches, apartment buildings each producing part of their own electricity while remaining connected to a smarter, stronger grid.
Let’s think about that for a second. Instead of every home simply consuming electricity, many become miniature power plants. That changes everything.
Energy Independence Isn’t Just a Buzzword
People hear “energy independence” and immediately think politics. I’m talking about something much simpler. Resilience.
When hurricanes knock out power.
When substations fail.
When transformers blow.
When demand spikes.
Communities with distributed solar and battery storage are simply in a better position to keep operating. Businesses stay open. Families stay comfortable. Emergency services keep running. That’s not theory anymore. We’ve already seen it happen.
Solar Isn’t the Only Answer…
And anyone who tells you it is probably has an agenda.
America will need natural gas.
We’ll need nuclear.
We’ll need hydro.
We’ll need wind.
We’ll probably invent technologies that don’t even exist yet. But solar deserves a seat at the table not because it’s trendy, but because it’s fast to deploy, increasingly affordable, and perfectly complements battery storage.
This isn’t about choosing one energy source over another. It’s about building a smarter energy ecosystem.
My Prediction
Here’s what I think happens over the next ten years.
Electricity becomes one of the most valuable commodities in America. Utilities will need to modernize the grid, but this will take decades. Battery storage becomes almost as common as standby generators are today.
Commercial buildings if they are smart, begin operating as power producers instead of simply power consumers. Artificial intelligence actually helps manage the grid it helped overload. And homeowners who invested early in energy independence will find themselves far ahead of the
curve.
The biggest mistake we can make is thinking tomorrow’s grid will look like yesterday’s, it won’t The AI revolution is forcing us to rethink everything Energy won’t be any different.
After nearly twenty years in this industry, I’ve learned one thing: The companies and the people who succeed aren’t the ones who react to change. They’re the ones who see it coming before everyone else does. I believe that’s exactly where we are today.
The future isn’t coming. It’s already here. Now we just have to figure out how to power it.
